Online forums and Disney travel communities regularly debate the aesthetic direction of resort refurbishments. Recent renovations at Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's BoardWalk Inn drew mixed reviews from loyal guests, with critics arguing that minimalist updates stripped away distinct historic personalities in favor of generic corporate palettes.

The Art of Animation mock-up rooms demonstrate that Imagineering is listening to that feedback. Rather than scrubbing character art, the design team is integrating it with greater craftsmanship. In the test rooms for The Little Mermaid wings, whimsical shell motifs and sketch-art linework are woven directly into textured woven headboards, laser-etched wall panels, and custom brass drawer pulls.

Carpeting is gone entirely, replaced by commercial luxury vinyl tile (LVT) with embedded wood-grain textures. To prevent the rooms from feeling cold or echoey, Imagineers have added sound-dampening acoustic subfloors and soft area rugs anchored securely beneath bed frames. The visual result strikes an intentional balance: clean and easy to sanitize for staff, yet colorful and welcoming for traveling families.
