Inside the Life of Igor Vovkovinskiy: the Untold Struggles of America's Tallest Man

Catch up with Inside the Life of Igor Vovkovinskiy: the Untold Struggles of America's Tallest Man. Read all about key highlights in full detail.

Igor Vovkovinskiy was born in 1982 in Bar, Ukraine. His mother, Svetlana, an ICU nurse, knew something was fundamentally wrong before his third birthday. Children grow in predictable spurts; Igor grew constantly. By age six, he stood over five feet tall and weighed more than 100 pounds. Local Soviet doctors lacked the diagnostic imaging and neurosurgical equipment necessary to address what was happening behind his brow.

The culprit was a benign tumor wedged against his pituitary gland. The growth flooded his developing body with relentless surges of human growth hormone (HGH). Without specialized intervention, this form of pituitary gigantism would prove fatal before he reached adulthood. In 1989, Svetlana secured emergency medical visas and brought seven-year-old Igor to the Mayo Clinic Rochester Minnesota, one of the premier endocrinology hubs in the world.

Surgeons at Mayo Clinic operated twice to resect the tumor. They managed to halt the runaway hormone production to a degree, but the growth could not be safely eliminated without catastrophic brain damage. Igor stayed in Rochester. The southern Minnesota city became his permanent home, giving him ongoing access to specialized specialists who spent decades managing his fragile balance of endocrine suppression, hormone replacement, and orthopedics.
