Inside the Kanumuri Bapiraju Family Legacy: the Untold Story Behind the Godavari Political Heavyweight
In August 2012, the Congress-led state government appointed Kanumuri Bapiraju as TTD Board Chairman. In Andhra Pradesh, few non-constitutional roles match the prestige and administrative scale of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams trust board. The appointment signaled that Bapiraju remained an indispensable confidant of state and central party leadership.
Overseeing Tirumala brought immense executive responsibility. The board managed annual budgets exceeding ₹2,000 crore, coordinated pilgrim amenities for over 60,000 visitors per day, and allocated coveted VIP break darshan recommendations. Bapiraju used his tenure to welcome national leaders, state dignitaries, and spiritual figures, handling protocol with seasoned political instincts.
His tenure ended abruptly following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. The newly elected Telugu Desam Party administration replaced the board, leading to brief legal challenges over board member tenures. Yet, the TTD chapter fundamentally altered the family’s social standing. It cemented their identity not merely as district politicians, but as trusted custodians of high-stakes religious governance.
