Inside the 'Girl Listening to Music' Meme: the True Origins Behind Internet Culture's Most Viral Visuals
The dominant image of an anime girl listening to music arrived out of legal necessity. In March 2015, French producer Dimitri launched the YouTube channel ChilledCow, streaming low-fidelity instrumental hip-hop over an animated loop of Shizuku Tsukishima, the studious protagonist from Studio Ghibli’s 1995 film Whisper of the Heart. The stream attracted hundreds of thousands of remote students, programmers, and night owls who treated the endless broadcast as shared ambient company.
That visual ran into intellectual property friction in July 2017, when copyright enforcement briefly knocked the stream offline. Dimitri responded by hiring Colombian-French animator Juan Pablo Machado in September 2017 to create an original replacement. Machado designed a brunette student writing by a desk beside her cat, looking out over the slopes of Lyon, France. Wearing large green headphones and focused on her notebook, she established the definitive lo-fi hip hop livestream aesthetic.
By the time ChilledCow rebranded as Lofi Girl in March 2021, the character had transcended her ambient music roots. The channel surpassed 13 million subscribers, and Machado’s loop became a baseline visual grammar across platforms. Creators across Europe, Asia, and North America quickly adapted the composition, redrawing the character inside local architecture, bedrooms, and commuter trains. The image proved that passive, non-interactive streaming could build durable personal recognition.
