From 'Come Sunday' to 'The Exorcist': Chiwetel Ejiofor's Shifting on-Screen Scale
Transitioning into the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Karl Mordo in Doctor Strange (2016) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) demanded an entirely different physical profile. Playing an uncompromising master of the mystic arts, Ejiofor needed to project lethal martial capability against Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange. Cumberbatch has a two-inch height advantage and an elongated, willowy build. To counter this, Marvel’s costume department outfitted Ejiofor in layered green tunics, wide leather shoulder guards, and heavy combat boots that added an extra inch and a half of lift.
Stunt coordinators capitalized on Ejiofor’s compact power during the Kamar-Taj training sequences. While Strange fought with fluid, sweeping arm movements, Mordo’s combat choreography focused on rooted stances, rapid staff strikes, and brutal forward momentum. Ejiofor trained extensively in martial arts footwork to keep his center of mass low, generating force that made his clashes with Cumberbatch look heavy and decisive. He did not need to be taller than Strange; he simply had to move like someone who could tear through him.
