Inside Look: Before-and-After Photos Reveal the Genius of Rustic Rock Chicken Architecture
Turning an uninsulated outbuilding into a high-end farmhouse renovation required aggressive structural intervention. Poultry houses were never intended to hold finished interior walls, let alone custom double-glazed fenestration.
Engineers introduced a concealed steel moment frame within the existing structural bays. This frame carries the load of a vaulted ceiling while opening wide expanses for floor-to-ceiling iron-framed glass sliders. Crews preserved the original roof rafters, wire-brushing the weathered patina to remove decades of whitewash and residue without stripping the aged grain.
Insulation posed another hurdle. Traditional batt insulation would have concealed the original tongue-and-groove roof boards. The crew solved this by applying continuous rigid polyisocyanurate foam panels directly over the exterior roof deck, finishing the top with standing-seam zinc panels. This approach kept the original weathered wood entirely visible from the inside, framing a rustic luxury retreat that exceeds modern energy efficiency standards.
