Before his name became inextricably linked to pop-culture gossip columns, Dumisani Dlamini built a formidable legacy in South African theater and film. Born in Durban, Dlamini rose to prominence in the late 1980s as an original cast member of Mbongeni Ngema's landmark musical Sarafina!. The production, which chronicled the student-led 1976 Soweto Uprising against apartheid rule, became a worldwide cultural phenomenon. Dlamini portrayed Crocodile, an energetic, rebellious youth whose dancing and stage presence captivated audiences on Broadway.

When Hollywood adapted Sarafina! into a 1992 feature film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Leleti Khumalo, Dlamini reprised his role. The project gave him international visibility and brought him to the United States for an extended tour. Over subsequent decades, he remained an enduring fixture on South African television, landing major roles in popular soap operas and dramas such as Yizo Yizo, Isibaya, eHostela, and Reyka. Within South Africa, he was a household name long before anyone knew his daughter would become an American chart-topper.

While living in New York during the theatrical run of Sarafina!, Dlamini met Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, an American graphic designer and painter of Jewish descent. Their relationship produced two children, including Amala, born on October 21, 1995. However, Dlamini's stay in the United States proved short-lived. Citing homesickness and career obligations back home, he relocated to South Africa when Amala was still a toddler, effectively closing the chapter on his everyday domestic presence in North America.
