How to Spot a Tampered Sephora Gift Card Before Checking Your Balance Online
Before you turn on your computer to check a Sephora gift card balance, inspect the card with your fingers and eyes. Tampered cards almost always leave subtle physical breadcrumbs. Counterfeiters move fast, and mass packaging modifications leave telltale manufacturing inconsistencies.
Run your thumb across the reverse side of the card, paying close attention to the barcode. Criminals often execute barcode overlay tampering by sticking a paper or vinyl decal over the original printed barcode. If you feel a raised edge, uneven texture, or bubbling, do not use the card. Cashiers who scan an overlay barcode inadvertently activate a completely different card already resting in a criminal's possession.
Inspect the PIN scratch-off film next. Legitimate manufacturers apply a uniform, thin foil coating that sits flush with the card surface. Tampered cards frequently show replaced scratch stickers purchased in bulk from online marketplaces. These replacement films are often thicker, slightly misaligned, or exhibit dried glue residue around the perimeter. If the foil looks matte while the rest of the card is gloss, or if scratching lightly reveals a second layer underneath, the card credentials are compromised.
Examine the cardboard packaging. Modern cosmetics retailers use tamper-evident packaging with specific tear strips and glued folds. If the cardboard displays fiber tears, re-glued flaps with cloudy hot-melt adhesive, or paper that splits easily along the top perforation, an unauthorized person opened and resealed that sleeve.
