Turn off the engine completely, take the key fob at least fifteen feet away from the vehicle to stop wireless modules from waking up, and plug in your memory saver if you choose to use one. Locate the battery. In most vehicles, it sits in a front corner of the engine bay, though some modern sedans and crossovers house it in the trunk floor or under the passenger seat.

There is a non-negotiable physical principle at work during removal: execute the negative terminal disconnect first. The negative terminal connects directly to your car's bare metal chassis, turning the entire vehicle body into electrical ground. If you place a metal wrench on the positive clamp while the negative cable is still connected, and your wrench accidentally touches any metal bracket or fender, you will complete an unrestricted circuit. That mistake causes blinding arcs, melts wiring looms, and can even crack the battery casing.

Loosen the nut on the negative clamp (marked with a minus symbol [-] and typically covered by a black plastic boot). Wiggle the clamp free without prying against the battery casing. Tuck the disconnected cable down along the side of the tray where it cannot spring back into contact with the post. Now, unbolt the positive terminal clamp (marked with a plus sign [+] and shielded under a red plastic cover). Remove it and push it safely aside.

Finally, remove the battery hold-down bracket. This metal bar or base wedge secures the battery against road vibration. Unthread the retaining rod nuts using your deep socket. Keep track of these fasteners; drop one down into the plastic engine splash pan, and you will spend an hour hunting for it with a magnetic pickup tool.
