Mainstream recognition did not arrive immediately for Stoll. For years, he was the recognizable guest star who elevated single episodes of network television. Everything shifted between 2011 and 2013, when two vastly different directors unlocked his dual capability for hyper-masculine bravado and heartbreaking emotional fragility.

In 2011, Woody Allen cast him as Ernest Hemingway in the romantic fantasy Midnight in Paris. Stoll stole every scene he occupied. Pounding bars, challenging strangers to box, and delivering rapid-fire declarations on courage and death, Stoll’s portrayal earned him an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Male. It proved that he could play iconic, larger-than-life figures without slipping into broad caricature.

Two years later, Stoll delivered the dramatic anchor of Netflix’s inaugural prestige drama, House of Cards. Playing troubled Pennsylvania Congressman Peter Russo, Stoll gave a gut-wrenching performance detailing substance abuse, political manipulation, and harrowing despair. His tragic arc across the first season captivated audiences and earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The industry no longer viewed him as an episodic journeyman; Stoll had established himself as a top-tier dramatic heavy.
