How Many Children Did Diego Rivera Actually Have? Fact-Checking His Lineage
While still living with Beloff in Paris, Rivera began a tempestuous affair with Marie Vorobieff-Stebelska, a Russian-born painter known widely by the moniker Marevna. In 1919, Marevna gave birth to a daughter, Marika Rivera. Rivera openly admitted paternity to friends within the Parisian avant-garde circle, but he refused to legally register the child or sign her birth certificate.
Marika grew up carrying a complicated resentment toward her father. Marevna’s memoirs detail extreme poverty and bitter arguments, yet Marika inherited her parents’ creative drive. She trained in classical dance and physical theatre, later building a distinguished European stage career. During the mid-twentieth century, Marika established herself as a character actress in international cinema, working alongside directors like Federico Fellini in his 1976 production Casanova. She spent the bulk of her life in England, preserving her mother's Cubist collection while maintaining a detached curiosity about the Mexican muralist legacy that cast such a long shadow over her childhood.
