Long before he became the titan of Mexican muralism, Rivera lived as an impoverished painter in the Montparnasse district of Paris. There, he met Russian artist Angelina Beloff in 1909. The couple entered a common-law partnership that lasted roughly twelve years. In 1916, Beloff gave birth to Rivera’s firstborn child, Diego Rivera Beloff, affectionately called "Dieguito."

Life in wartime Paris was brutal. Rivera struggled to sell his Cubist canvases, leaving the household without adequate fuel or nutrition. During the bitter winter of 1917, baby Dieguito contracted acute respiratory complications, often cited in correspondence as pulmonary influenza or meningitis, and died at just fourteen months old. The loss shattered Beloff and drove an irreparable wedge into the relationship. When Rivera returned to Mexico in 1921 under the patronage of Education Minister José Vasconcelos, he left Beloff behind, never sending for her despite promises to support her.
