Goddess of Discord Explained: Everything You Need to Know About Eris
While astronomers were looking outward through telescopes, countercultural writers were looking inward through satire. In the late 1950s, writers Greg Hill (Malaclypse the Younger) and Kerry Thornley (Lord Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst) founded Discordianism, an elaborate parody religion centered entirely on Eris. Published in 1965, the Principia Discordia challenged Western obsessions with rigid logic, hierarchy, and imperial authority.
Discordianism proclaimed that order and disorder were complementary illusions, arguing that human misery stems from trying to impose tidy grids onto an inherently anarchic universe. The movement adopted the Sacred Chao, a symbol featuring the Golden Apple of Discord balanced inside the Pentagon, and popularized the concept of "Operation Mindfuck," a strategy of intentional disinformation designed to force dogmatic thinkers into questioning reality.
Through Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea’s cult literary work, The Illuminatus! Trilogy (1975), Discordian concepts infiltrated early computer culture, hacker circles, and the conceptual roots of online meme production. Long before troll farms and bot networks weaponized political confusion, twentieth-century Discordians anticipated how easily modern information networks could be hijacked by tossing an ideological apple into the middle of a crowded forum.
