From Unholy Vows to Multi-State Tragedy: the Complete Pladl Timeline
In January 2018, law enforcement tracked the pair down in Knightdale, arresting both without incident. Steven posted a $1 million bond, while Katie was released on terms requiring her to live with her adoptive parents, Anthony and Kelly Fusco, in Dover, New York. Crucially, the court orders barred Steven from having any direct or indirect contact with Katie or their infant son, who had been placed in the temporary custody of Steven's mother.
Separated from Steven's domineering presence, Katie began to reassert control over her life. In early April 2018, she called Steven directly to inform him that their relationship was permanently over and that she would not return to North Carolina. That telephone call shattered Steven's reality. Driven by possessive rage, he set out on a calculated, multi-state murder rampage.
On the morning of April 11, Steven picked up seven-month-old Bennett from his mother's house in Knightdale, claiming he wanted to take the infant out for breakfast. Instead, he took the boy to his home and suffocated him. He then loaded several firearms into his vehicle and drove through the night toward Dutchess County, New York.
At approximately 8:40 a.m. on April 12, Steven ambushed Katie and her 56-year-old adoptive father, Anthony Fusco, as they sat in Fusco's pickup truck near a highway intersection in New Milford, Connecticut, just across the state line from Dover. Armed with a semi-automatic rifle, Steven fired multiple rounds through the driver-side window, killing both instantly. Steven then drove several miles into Dover, New York, placed a 911 call confessing that he had murdered his son in Knightdale, and shot himself in the head inside his minivan.
