By David Miller
Minor characters in high-budget animated films often serve as functional background dressing or easy slapstick fodder. Katie succeeded by defying that formula entirely. By pairing minimalist character animation with a child actor’s sincere delivery of absurd writing, Blue Sky Studios produced a moment of pure comedic friction that outlived the film’s theatrical run.
Nearly two decades after its premiere, Katie remains the definitive proof that screen time has little to do with cultural longevity. With fewer than twenty words of dialogue, a round yellow puffball managed to steal an entire feature film from Hollywood heavyweights, and built a permanent home in internet pop culture.
