From 'Purpose' to 2026 Viral Sensation: the Complete Evolution of 'Love Yourself'
By Robert Thorne
Q1: Who actually wrote "Love Yourself"?
The song was written by Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, and producer Benny Blanco. Sheeran conceived the original melody and acoustic hook before passing it to Bieber and Blanco to finalize the lyrics and arrangement.
Q2: What is the real meaning behind the lyrics of "Love Yourself"?
The song is a biting, passive-aggressive breakup track. The central hook "you should go and love yourself" is a family-friendly substitute for "f*** yourself," directed at a narcissist partner who used Bieber's fame for social leverage.
Q3: Why did "Love Yourself" become bigger than other singles on Purpose?
Unlike the electronic dance-pop styles of "Sorry" or "What Do You Mean?", which reflect the sound trends of 2015, the acoustic foundation of "Love Yourself" is sonically neutral. That timelessness prevents the song from feeling dated, allowing it to sustain heavy radio play and streaming rotation year after year.
