The genesis of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony began on the freezing streets of Cleveland, Ohio. Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone, Bizzy Bone, and Wish Bone (alongside Flesh-n-Bone) formed an artistic collective originally known as the Band-Aid Boys before adopting B.O.N.E. Enterpri$e. In late 1993, determined to escape poverty, the crew pooled their money for one-way Greyhound bus tickets to Los Angeles to audition for Eric "Eazy-E" Wright, the founder of Ruthless Records. That initial trip proved unsuccessful, but when Wright booked a show in Cleveland months later, the young artists tracked him down backstage. Their rapid-fire, barbershop-quartet cadence caught his ear on the spot.

Wright immediately signed the group and flew them back to California, recognizing that their vocal synergy bridged the gap between West Coast funk, southern rhythm, and midwestern desperation. He served as an executive producer and creative guide, refining their raw energy into cohesive project concepts. When Eazy-E tragically passed away from AIDS complications in March 1995, just months before E. 1999 Eternal hit record store shelves, the group dedicated the record to his memory. "1st of Tha Month" arrived as the project’s lead promotional single, capturing the street-level hustle of communities surviving on government assistance.
