From Jakarta to Global Arenas: Niki's Rise, Complete Profile, and Vital Statistics
Long before selling out international arenas, Zefanya was an ordinary high schooler in Jakarta uploading indie covers to YouTube under her real name. Armed with an acoustic guitar and raw emotional honesty, she tackled songs by artists like Dodie Clark and Corinne Bailey Rae. Her bedroom videos earned a modest domestic following, but her ambition stretched far beyond regional covers.
In 2017, she took a calculated gamble. Moving to Nashville to study music at Lipscomb University, she began releasing original tracks under the moniker NIKI. Songs like "See U Never" and "I Like U" caught the ear of fellow Indonesian artist Rich Brian, who passed her demos to Sean Miyashiro, founder of Asian-focused music collective 88rising.
Miyashiro signed her immediately. NIKI traded the quiet classrooms of Tennessee for the fast-paced creative pressure of Los Angeles, becoming the first female artist signed to the 88rising roster. Her breakthrough was swift. With the 2019 release of "Lowkey," she scored a streaming juggernaut that surpassed hundreds of millions of plays worldwide, cementing her status as a generational songwriting talent across Southeast Asia and North America.
