From El Paso Demo to Global Diamond Hit: the Incredible Journey of Khalid's 'Location'
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
Stripping away traditional production bloat made the track cut through crowded airwaves. Producer SmashDavid brought crisp drums that nodded to classic hip-hop rhythms, while Syk Sense production contributed the echoing chord progressions that gave the track its melancholy air. Tunji Ige's structural adjustments kept the focus entirely on Khalid's vocals.
Unlike contemporary contemporaries who relied heavily on pitch-correction and aggressive vocal stacking, Khalid recorded his parts with natural grit. His baritone cracked naturally on higher notes, lending authenticity to the lyrics. The backing harmonies evoked classic 1960s doo-wop quartets, reimagined with the sub-bass frequencies demanded by modern streaming listeners. That contrast allowed the single to cross format borders, earning airplay on rhythmic, adult contemporary, and pop radio stations simultaneously.
