From 2001 to Today: How Scary Movie 2 Became a Cult Horror-Comedy Icon
The centerpiece of the film's haunted house parody takes place inside the cursed bedrooms of Hell House. Tori Spelling, cast as college student Alex Monday, finds herself visited in the dead of night by the spectral presence of the mansion’s late patriarch, Hugh Kane (played by Richard Moll). In Jan de Bont’s The Haunting, the ghostly encounters in the master suite were presented as harrowing violations of the female protagonists played by Lili Taylor and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
The Wayans brothers upended the scenario by transforming terror into absurdity. Instead of fleeing in fright, Spelling’s character turns the tables on the poltergeist, aggressively welcoming the encounter with demands for emotional commitment. Spelling embraced the self-deprecating humor, parodying her squeaky-clean Beverly Hills, 90210 persona. The Hugh Kane ghost bedroom scene remains one of the most memorable sequences of 2000s raunchy horror parody precisely because it refused to play the victim trope straight, relying instead on pure, vulgar physical slapstick.
