Figure Skating Career Longevity Explained: Age Minimums, Rules, and Prime Year's
The International Skating Union (ISU) initiated a significant regulatory change at its 2022 Congress in Phuket, voting to raise the minimum senior competition age from 15 to 17. The transition was phased over three seasons:
- Skaters had to be 15 during the 2022, 2023 season.
- The threshold rose to 16 for 2023, 2024.
- It reached 17 for the 2024, 2025 season, establishing the standard for the 2026 Olympic cycle.
To compete in senior ISU events or qualify for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano-Cortina, an athlete must have reached age 17 before the July 1 preceding the competition.
This change disrupted early-specialization pipelines. National federations could no longer gamble on a 15-year-old skater surviving an intense quad-heavy season just long enough to win an Olympic medal before burning out. Coaches were forced to build jump techniques capable of surviving physical maturation. The junior circuit retained technical experimentation, but skaters who plan on senior success must pace their development. Longevity became an operational necessity rather than a secondary consideration.
