Fetty Wap Eye Prosthetic Decision: Why the Rapper Stopped Hiding His Condition
Maxwell was born on June 7, 1991, in Paterson, New Jersey. Within his initial months of life, doctors diagnosed him with infantile or congenital glaucoma, a rare condition occurring in roughly 1 out of every 10,000 live births in the United States. Pediatric glaucoma stems from improper development of the eye’s aqueous outflow system before birth, leading to high intraocular pressure. If untreated, elevated pressure stretches the infant eye tissue, damages the optic nerve, and causes irreversible blindness.
Pediatric ophthalmologists intervened quickly, performing multiple surgeries to relieve pressure in Maxwell's eyes. The operations successfully protected his right eye, preserving normal sight. His left eye, however, suffered severe optic nerve atrophy and structural damage that could not be reversed. Specialists ultimately removed the diseased left eye to prevent recurring complications and persistent pain, fitting the young boy with an ocular prosthesis to fill the orbital socket as his facial bones developed.
