Curious as to what fact-Checking Katherine Johnson’s Family: Who Are Her Real Children and Heirs matters today? Read our breakdown and key takeaways.

The family story began well before the launch of Project Mercury. Katherine Coleman met chemistry teacher James Francis Goble while studying at West Virginia State University (then West Virginia State College), where she had enrolled at age 15 to learn under the mentorship of legendary mathematician W.W. Schieffelin Claytor. The couple married secretly in 1939 because female public school teachers were frequently barred from marital status under local district policies. They soon settled down to build a family.

Between 1940 and 1944, Katherine gave birth to three daughters: Constance, Joylette, and Katherine (often called "Kathy" to avoid confusion with her mother). Life changed dramatically in 1952 when relatives tipped the family off to open civilian positions for "computers", human calculation specialists, at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in Hampton, Virginia.

James Goble moved his family to the Hampton Roads peninsula so Katherine could join the West Area Computing Unit at Langley Research Center in 1953. Tragedy struck just three years later. James was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and died in December 1956. At 38, Katherine found herself working full-time on trajectory calculations while keeping her three daughters fed, clothed, and focused on their schooling.
