Everything You Need to Know About Dawit Eklund’s Parents: Jon and Yeshi Eklund
Dawit Eklund was born in 1989 and spent his formative years moving between international capitals before his family settled back in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. He spent critical childhood chapters in Addis Ababa and Cairo, attending international academies while absorbing local street sounds, regional radio broadcasts, and the rich polyrhythms of North and East African folk traditions. Relocating periodically taught the Eklund siblings how to navigate distinct cultural codes with ease.
When the family eventually transitioned to the United States, Dawit enrolled at George Washington University, majoring in International Affairs. The choice mirrored his father’s professional path, yet the District’s vibrant underground music community soon captured his creative focus. Washington possessed a massive Ethiopian diaspora, the largest outside Africa, which allowed Dawit to reconcile his American suburban life with his parents’ East African history. That blend of diplomatic discipline and diaspora culture provided the foundation for his creative career.
