Fact Check: the Truth Behind 'Listen with Linda' Searches and Viral Internet Lore
By Alexander Ross
Q1: Is "Listen with Linda" an official podcast, talk show, or YouTube channel?
No. There is no major broadcast series, podcast, or verified channel operating under that name. It is an algorithmic search phrase created by automated transcription mishearings and voice search inputs.
Q2: Who were the people in the original "Listen Linda" cupcake video?
The video featured three-year-old Mateo Beltran and his mother, Linda Beltran. Recorded in their San Jose living room in March 2014, the clip showed Mateo attempting to negotiate permission to eat cupcakes before dinner.
Q3: How did musical artists get mixed up with this viral video search?
Search engine auto-complete algorithms frequently cluster terms that share identical keywords. When coverage of punk band The Linda Lindas and retrospective profiles of singer Linda Ronstadt ran alongside renewed circulation of the Beltran meme, audio search queries blended together.
