Fact-Check: Is Nicolas Cage Returning or Did Ryan Gosling Completely Take over Ghost Rider?

Got questions about Fact-Check: Is Nicolas Cage Returning or Did Ryan Gosling Completely Take over Ghost Rider? We break down the key details for easy understanding.

Ghost Rider has languished in live-action purgatory for over a decade. Sony Pictures held the cinematic license throughout the 2000s, producing Ghost Rider in 2007 and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 2011. Both starred Nicolas Cage, an actor whose personal devotion to comic history ran so deep he derived his professional surname from Luke Cage. Sony's entries grossed over $360 million combined worldwide. However, critical indifference and shifting studio priorities led Sony to let the film rights revert to Marvel Studios in May 2013.

Instead of an immediate tentpole reboot, the character took a detour through television. Gabriel Luna debuted in 2016 during the fourth season of ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., portraying Robbie Reyes, the East Los Angeles mechanic who drives a hell-charged 1969 Dodge Charger rather than a motorcycle. Luna's performance drew praise for its emotional gravity and grounded visual effects. Marvel Television even greenlit a solo Ghost Rider spin-off series for Hulu in May 2019. Four months later, Hulu abruptly canceled the project due to creative impasses, just as Marvel Studios absorbed Marvel Television under Kevin Feige's consolidated leadership.

The character was frozen. Feige preserved the IP, holding the Spirit of Vengeance in reserve while rolling out the Multiverse Saga. Industry observers at Heroic Hollywood noted in January 2026 that Marvel deliberately paused supernatural projects to refine its tonal strategy, ensuring street-level and occult heroes would not collide awkwardly with cosmic epics.
