Fact Check: Is Kevin Lanning Linked to Oregon Athletics or a Mistaken Identity?
By Sarah Jenkins
Search engines process billions of queries daily using relational clustering. When a user begins typing "Lanning," algorithms evaluate recent news volume, family tree questions, and trending names. Over the past three seasons, public obituary records for Sandra Kelley Lanning, a Missouri native who passed away leaving behind her devoted husband Kevin Lanning, began appearing in the same knowledge panels that track college athletics. Content scrapers looking to harvest ad revenue quickly noticed the spike in the surname Lanning and built low-quality biographical stub pages mixing the two unrelated parties.
Sandra Kelley Lanning was a respected private citizen whose family published traditional local obituaries commemorating her life, marriage to Kevin, and close-knit family. Nothing in her public record links her or Kevin Lanning to the University of Oregon, the Pac-12, or the Big Ten. Yet because Dan Lanning also hails from Richmond, Missouri, automated scrapers matched the surname with the state origin. They populated search snippets with confused assertions about "Kevin Lanning's wife," baffling sports enthusiasts who were simply looking for details about the Ducks' coaching staff.
This automated aggregation is not uncommon in the modern digital ecosystem. Third-party directories routinely scrape county clerk records, funeral home guestbooks, and athletic department bios, mashing them into automated paragraphs designed to capture programmatic search traffic. For casual readers skimming search snippets without clicking primary sources, the boundary between an obituary and a sports profile evaporates quickly.
