Fact-Check: Did 'Jalen Collins' Sign an Nba Contract Extension?
By Sarah Jenkins
The real tension inside the Pistons organization centers around 22-year-old rim protector Jalen Duren. Eligible for a designated rookie scale extension, Duren represents both Detroit's defensive ceiling and their biggest financial dilemma.
Duren has produced impressive traditional double-doubles, yet front office executives across the league remain divided on his two-way discipline and perimeter switchability. Talks between Detroit and Duren's representatives have dragged on without common ground. Detroit received a cold reality check about the center market: overcommitting to non-shooting bigs under the current collective bargaining agreement can permanently paralyze a franchise's cap sheet.
Detroit holds substantial long-term leverage. If no agreement is reached prior to the rookie extension deadline, Duren will play out the final year of his rookie contract and enter restricted free agency, where Detroit can issue a qualifying offer status and match any competing offer sheet.
