Fact Check: Did Darren Aronofsky Cast Kathy Bates to Play Elon Musk?
By Alexander Ross
The frenzy began when digital creators produced mock promotional collateral for A24's planned feature. The fan-made graphics paired an image of Bates from a dramatic red-carpet appearance with Aronofsky’s signature stark typography, accompanied by a tongue-in-cheek tagline claiming the project would focus on Musk’s high-profile business deals and private controversies.
Within forty-eight hours, engagement aggregators stripped away the satirical context. Re-uploaded screenshots spread rapidly across private messaging channels and discussion boards. Audiences accustomed to experimental decisions from independent film houses found the premise oddly believable. A24 has built its brand on subversive, high-risk cinema, making an outlandish casting rumor sound like an audacious auteur statement. Fact-checking monitors quickly flagged the posts after several aggregation accounts presented the fan concept as a confirmed production update.
