Fact Check: Clarifying Memorial Listings for Mary Butler Young
By Alexander Ross
Q1: Was there an official memorial service for a "Mary Butler Young"?
A1: No official, verified mortuary listing exists under that singular compound name. The internet queries originate from merged notices for Ms. Mary Butler (Adams Funeral Services, September 2023) and Mary Young (McDougald Funeral & Cremation Services, March 2025).
Q2: Why do search engines show obituary pages with conflicting dates and locations?
A2: Aggregator websites write automated scripts that pull names, dates, and snippets from multiple regional providers. When two individuals share similar first and last names across overlapping dates, the automated scripts often publish hybrid pages containing pieces of both records.
Q3: How can genealogists authenticate a legitimate family obituary?
A3: Request official records directly from state vital records departments, review verified cemetery plot deeds, or access direct archives on the official website of the funeral establishment handling the arrangements.
