Rather than fabricating molded plastic or composite subwoofer housings that intrude into cargo space, designers repurposed the longitudinal structural members of the vehicle. The extruded aluminum sills running beneath the door apertures were engineered as fully sealed, high-volume resonance chambers.
High-output low-frequency transducers mount directly above ports routed into these chassis cavities. When the driver cone moves, the internal volume of the aluminum sill serves as an immense acoustic enclosure. Because extruded aluminum offers massive structural rigidity compared to stamped steel or fiberglass, the walls of the sill resist flex under high sound pressure levels. This structural rigidity eliminates enclosure coloration, enabling deep, tight bass transients without sacrificing a millimeter of trunk volume.
