Everything You Need to Know About Mello's Death: Causes, Motives, and Impact
Mello's final hours unfold rapidly in Episode 35, titled "Malice" (corresponding to manga chapter 99). Operating outside the law, Mello had watched Light Yagami use news anchor Kiyomi Takada as Kira's public voice and operational cut-out. Recognizing that Near’s SPK was closing in on a stalemate, Mello executed an audacious strike. Disguised on a motorcycle, he intercepted Takada’s motorcade, forced her into a delivery van, and drove her to a secluded garage.
The abduction stripped Takada of her public security detail. Inside the back of the truck, Mello ordered Takada to strip naked to ensure she carried no tracking bugs, transmitters, or communication equipment. He showed unexpected chivalry, allowing her a blanket to cover herself.
That single concession proved fatal.
Takada had a piece of Death Note paper hidden inside her bra, along with a concealed pen. Light had prepared her for capture, instructing her to eliminate threats using scrap paper if separated from the main notebook. Knowing Mello’s real identity, which Light had learned earlier from his father Soichiro Yagami during the mafia raid, Takada scribbled his true name into the scrap. Seconds later, Mello clutched his chest and collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest.
