Everything We Know About Chloé Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’: Release Date, Cast, and Spielberg Tie
In mid-2026 retrospective interviews, Zhao unpacked the deliberate color symbolism structuring the film’s narrative arc. Working alongside cinematographer Łukasz Żal, Zhao conceived the palette in two contrasting halves: the earthy amber ochres of rural Warwickshire and the suffocating charcoal grays of plague-ridden London.
Warwickshire lives in warm golden hours, lush forest moss, and vibrant amber hues, reflecting Agnes's harmony with nature and maternal security. When Hamnet falls ill, the colors visibly drain from the domestic space. By the time the story shifts to London, the screen is overtaken by inky charcoals, damp cobblestone blues, and sharp theatrical blacks. Zhao explained that these shifting chromatic layers visually chart how private human mourning is distilled, cooled, and ultimately transformed into the austere art of the stage.
