Sheriff Andy Taylor spent the earliest seasons of the series searching for romantic footing. Following the departure of Elinor Donahue's Ellie Walker after Season 1, the writers experimented with several courtships. In Season 2, Episode 24, "The County Nurse" (original air date: March 19, 1962), audiences met Mary Simpson. Portrayed by Hollywood leading lady Julie Adams, Mary was professional, fiercely competent, and completely immune to Mayberry’s laid-back rural pacing.

Adams brought instant gravitas to the role. Already an established film icon after starring as Kay Lawrence in Universal’s 1954 classic Creature from the Black Lagoon, she played Simpson not as a coy romantic foil, but as an educated public health professional determined to vaccinate stubborn hill resident Rafe Hollister. Andy spent the half-hour balancing county law with backwoods diplomacy, ultimately coaxing Rafe into taking his shot by serenading him. Adams gave Mary Simpson sharp comedic timing and genuine warmth, laying the groundwork for what appeared to be Andy's next serious multi-episode relationship.

Yet Adams did not stay. Film commitments and busy studio schedules made ongoing episodic commitments tricky for established screen stars. When the writing team decided to bring the character back just five weeks later, they kept the name and profession, but overhauled the casting entirely.
