Elon Musk & Kathy Bates: Complete Timeline of the Biopic Buzz and Viral Jokes
By Sophia Al-Mansoor
The comparison was not pulled from thin air. A specific viral post paired an unvarnished red-carpet photograph of Musk with a still of Kathy Bates from the late 1990s. The visual symmetry proved unexpectedly sharp: matching jawlines, similarly spaced eyes, and identical pursed-lip expressions that visual editors could align with eerie accuracy.
The joke deepened as commentators began drawing direct thematic lines to Bates’s Academy Award-winning turn as Annie Wilkes in Rob Reiner’s 1990 adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery. Online observers juxtaposed Wilkes’s obsessive, erratic mood swings with Musk’s notorious late-night posts on X, corporate restructuring mandates, and public spats. Users cut together videos of Bates brandishing a sledgehammer over James Caan with captions referencing Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting rounds at Twitter headquarters. The visual similarity gave the joke its initial momentum, but the narrative parallel to King’s volatile antagonist cemented its lasting power.
