Dumped by the School Belle I Evolved a Baby Dragon: the Revenge Trope Taking over Fantasy Fiction
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
Setting the story in an urban cultivation environment rather than a medieval fantasy realm fundamentally alters the social dynamics. Modern high schools replace dusty martial sects. Guild recruiters carry corporate contracts instead of jade slips. Social status hinges on aptitude test scores transmitted across live video streams.
This juxtaposition heightens the impact of every face-slapping sequence. When the protagonist overturns academy rankings, the news spreads through viral clips and smartphone alerts. The traditional tropes of eastern fantasy fiction, ancestral pressure, arrogance among noble sciopns, resource monopolies, gain immediate resonance when translated into high-tech urban environments.
The light novel review consensus highlights this exact pacing balance: by pairing bureaucratic modern institutions with chaotic primordial beasts, the writer keeps the world recognizable yet dangerously unstable.
