As the shooting began, uniformed Tucson police officers patrolling adjacent streets ran toward the sound of gunfire. The shooter broke away from the crowd, running west down an alleyway to evade capture. Officers initiated a pursuit on foot, shouting commands for the suspect to halt and drop his weapon.

The pursuit ended within blocks. According to investigators, the suspect turned toward an approaching officer while still armed, prompting an officer to discharge their duty weapon. Struck by police gunfire, the suspect dropped to the ground and was disarmed without further exchange of bullets.
