Dog Whisperer Tragedy Fact Check: Debunking Viral Claims and Lethal Attack Rumors
By Alexander Ross
While the lethal attack claims surrounding production sets are unfounded, Millan’s training center faced genuine legal peril over severe canine aggression. In September 2021, former competitive gymnast Lidia Matiss filed a high-profile dog bite lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court against Millan and his dog training facility, the Dog Psychology Center in Santa Clarita, California.
Matiss alleged that in 2017, she visited an office building owned by Millan to meet her mother, who was an employee at the property. According to the complaint, Millan’s well-known pit bull, Junior, who frequently appeared on television as a calm, balanced ambassador for his breed, was wandering the premises unleashed and unsupervised. Matiss stated that Junior lunged at her without warning, biting her severely on the legs and calves. The injuries caused nerve damage, required immediate emergency medical care, and effectively ended her prospects as a junior Olympic gymnast.
The lawsuit went further, leveling an even more explosive claim: Junior had allegedly mauled a dog belonging to musician and actress Queen Latifah, resulting in that animal's death. Matiss’s legal team claimed that Millan attempted to conceal the mauling by directing staff to tell Queen Latifah that her dog had been struck by a car. Millan denied the allegations in formal court responses, asserting that Matiss possessed full awareness of the inherent risks of entering the facility and had acted negligently. The litigation was quietly settled out of court, but court transcripts and public reporting permanently altered Junior’s public image and fueled search terms connecting Millan’s brand with fatal canine violence.
