The creative direction of The Thundermans: Undercover introduces new narrative possibilities for the speedster. When a franchise shifts from a tween multi-camera format to an undercover adventure, the characters age alongside their audience. In the original series, Billy was the naive kid falling through ceiling panels. Now, the character stands alongside his siblings as a capable young adult.

Older character dynamics create room for romantic subplots that would have felt out of place during the initial 2013 run. Whether writers introduce a civilian love interest or a rival undercover operative, giving Billy an actual girlfriend is an untapped storyline for the character. Viewers tracking the production will watch closely to see if Nickelodeon decides to pair Billy off or preserve his role as the unencumbered superhero of the team.
