Diljit Dosanjh's Career Origins Explained: Age, First Songs, and the Decisions That Made Him
Dosanjh was born Daljit Singh on January 6, 1984, in Dosanjh Kalan, a village located in the Jalandhar district of Punjab, India. His father, Balbir Singh, worked as an employee for Punjab Roadways, while his mother, Sukhwinder Kaur, managed the household. Money was perpetually tight, and rural life offered little exposure to commercial entertainment pipelines. The family later moved to Ludhiana, where Dosanjh completed his schooling at Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School.
His initial vocal training did not come from an elite classical academy. Instead, it happened within the local Gurdwara, where he sang kirtan (Sikh devotional hymns). That devotional grounding was essential. It taught him breath control, raw projection without dynamic microphone reliance, and an instinct for connecting directly with an audience.
Singing in sacred spaces demystified stage fright early. By age 11 or 12, Dosanjh was already comfortable leading hymns in front of hundreds of congregants. These early sessions provided the vocal foundation that later allowed him to sustain high-energy, three-hour live sets across grueling international tour schedules.
