Diego Rivera's Secret Children & Dramatic Marriages: Inside His Complex Dynasty

Dive deep into Diego Rivera's Secret Children & Dramatic Marriages: Inside His Complex Dynasty with our latest coverage.

Before he emerged as the titan of Mexican muralism, Diego Rivera spent over a decade in Paris absorbing the avant-garde movements of Montparnasse. In 1909, Rivera met Russian artist Angelina Beloff in Bruges. Their subsequent common-law marriage lasted twelve years, serving as the financial and emotional anchor of his European phase. In 1916, Beloff gave birth to Rivera’s firstborn child, Diego Rivera Beloff.

The infant’s life ended abruptly during the brutal winter of 1917, 1918, when an outbreak of respiratory illness claimed the child at barely fourteen months old. Rivera was shattered, but his restless attention soon shifted to Maria Vorobieff-Stebelska, a Russian-born Cubist painter universally known as Marevna.

Their volatile affair yielded Rivera’s second child, Marika Rivera, born in November 1919. Rivera refused to formally give Marika his legal surname during his lifetime, though he never contested paternity in private correspondence. Marevna later published memoirs detailing Rivera’s explosive temperament and his subsequent abandonment of both Beloff and herself when he returned to Mexico in 1921. Marika Rivera grew up to become a prominent actress and expressive dancer in London and Paris, carrying Rivera’s bloodline into British theatre circles without ever relying on his Mexican estate for support.
