Did Lionel Messi Reverse His Retirement? Fact-Checking Argentina's Squad News
By Sophia Al-Mansoor
The question driving global debate is whether this roster spot represents a genuine return to competitive football. Team officials have confirmed that Messi's appearance in camp is an organized farewell tour rather than a tactical reintegration. Scaloni plans to give the veteran minutes during the opening exhibition before handing over responsibilities entirely to younger attackers for the remainder of the international window.
The timing aligns deliberately with outside honors. On October 6, 2026, Messi will receive an honorary Doctor Honoris Causa degree from the University of Buenos Aires. By holding camp at the Ezeiza complex during the exact week of this academic milestone, the Argentine squad provides an escort of honor for their most decorated captain. Messi will participate in training, accept his university distinction, play a celebratory half of football, and step aside permanently.
