Design Fails & New Releases: Pennsylvania's Changing License Plate Lineup
By Alexander Ross
Opting for a custom configuration offers practical advantages beyond personalization. Custom arrangements help avoid standard character sequences that suffer from the zero-versus-eight recognition problem. Securing a custom sequence requires navigating PennDOT's bureaucratic pipeline with precision.
Before submitting paper applications, verify configuration options through the official PennDOT vanity plate check tool online. The digital database checks potential combinations against existing records instantly. State regulations allow up to seven letters and numbers for standard passenger vehicles. You may include one hyphen or space, though punctuation marks like asterisks, dollar signs, and ampersands remain barred.
Once you confirm your desired text is free, fill out Form MV-904 (Application for Personalized, Amateur Radio Operator, or Press Photographer License Plate). PennDOT requires owners to list two alternative configurations beneath their primary choice in case a conflicting request clears the review division first. Mail the completed form along with a check or money order for the $97 fee to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Harrisburg. Applications typically take 8 to 10 weeks to manufacture and ship to your registered address.
PennDOT applies strict decency guidelines during manual application checks. Any string of characters that implies vulgarity, mimics law enforcement markings, references controlled substances, or uses recognizable slang for obscene phrasing faces immediate denial. If examiners reject a proposed configuration, the agency returns the application fee by mail.
