Descendants 5 Cast Revealed: Awkwafina Joins Wicked Wonderland in Major Franchise Shake-Up
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
Disney stunned franchise fans in June 2026 when the first official teaser trailer unveiled Awkwafina's casting. The 38-year-old actress and comedian voices Chessy the Cat, an eccentric, illusion-weaving feline whose loyalty fluctuates depending on who holds the upper hand. Rather than a straightforward translation of the animated 1951 Cheshire Cat, Chessy functions as a streetwise narrator and disruptive magical presence who pushes the teenage protagonists into increasingly dizzying scenarios.
Awkwafina brings a distinct improvisational cadence that cuts through the stylized dialogue. Disney music producers tailored specific patter tracks and musical verses to match her signature raspy delivery, giving Chessy an immediate audio identity. Online reaction across Disney enthusiast hubs lit up immediately after the reveal. Viewers praised the decision to tap an established comedy headliner, pointing out that casting a bankable voice actor bridges the gap between younger streaming audiences and adult Disney animation loyalists who grew up on the studio's mid-century classics.
