Decoded: Full Lyrics and Meme Origins of 'Oh My God Becky Look at Her Butt'
By Alexander Ross
Q1: Who actually provided the voice for the 'Becky' dialogue?
A1: The spoken intro was recorded by Mary Ann Morgan and Amylia Dorsey in late 1991. Morgan delivered the primary lines targeting "Becky," mimicking the California vocal-fry style requested by Sir Mix-a-Lot during the studio session.
Q2: Why did MTV ban the original 'Baby Got Back' video in 1992?
A2: Network executives deemed the video sexually suggestive and visually inappropriate for young audiences due to its focus on female buttocks. MTV barred the video from daytime broadcasting, restricting it exclusively to late-night blocks after 9:00 PM.
Q3: Did Sir Mix-a-Lot write the intro script himself?
A3: Yes. Sir Mix-a-Lot wrote the dialogue specifically to mimic white suburban conversations he had observed, intending to expose how mainstream beauty media pathologized Black bodies while elevating hyper-thin aesthetics.
Q4: How did Nicki Minaj acquire the rights to sample the dialogue in 'Anaconda'?
A4: Minaj and her production team negotiated directly with Sir Mix-a-Lot and his publishing representatives. Ray granted approval and retains major co-writing and publishing credits on "Anaconda," which earned substantial royalties following its 2014 release.
Q5: What was the origin of the name 'Becky' in pop culture?
A5: While "Becky" appeared in classic literature, "Baby Got Back" cemented it within modern slang as the archetypal name for a naive, privileged suburban woman. Decades later, Beyoncé famously revitalized and evolved the trope on her 2016 album Lemonade with the line "Becky with the good hair."
