Countdown to Christmas 2025: Live Timeline of Holiday Travel and Retail Cutoffs
By James H. Sterling
Big-box retailers have permanently shifted away from late-night holiday hours. Following operational patterns standardized across the industry, major department stores and warehouse clubs cease in-store operations between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM local time on Christmas Eve 2025.
Supermarkets and convenience stores maintain slightly longer operational windows to handle last-minute meal preparation needs, yet nearly all close by 9:00 PM on December 24. On Christmas Day itself, national grocery and general retail chains remain shut nationwide, leaving only select regional pharmacy outposts, independent fuel stations, and convenience storefronts open on modified shifts.
Online buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS) services offer a practical lifeline for delayed shoppers. However, store logistics require orders to be submitted before midday on December 24 to guarantee fulfillment before store doors lock for the evening.
