Complete Troubleshooting Guide: How to Remove Any Extra Page in Word Every Time
Section breaks allow different headers, footers, column layouts, or orientations (landscape vs. portrait) to coexist inside a single file. However, they frequently create unyielding blank pages.
If you hit Delete on a section break carelessly, you risk wrecking the formatting of the preceding chapter. Word inherits section formatting from the section break that follows it. Deleting a break merges the preceding text into the downstream section's parameters.
To remove an unwanted break cleanly:
- Identify the marker: look for Section Break (Next Page), Section Break (Odd Page), or Section Break (Even Page).
- If the break exists solely to split layouts, click directly in front of the double line and tap Delete.
- If you must preserve formatting variations across two chapters without triggering an empty page, double-click the section break marker to open Page Setup.
- In the Layout tab, look for the Section start dropdown menu.
- Change the setting from Next page to Continuous, then click OK.
The continuous break preserves your discrete headers, margins, or column sets while pulling subsequent text upward, clearing the dead sheet.
