Complete 'Stay' Lyrics Breakdown: Rihanna and Mikky Ekko’s Unfiltered Duet
By James H. Sterling
The song did not originate in a star-studded pop camp. In 2012, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Mikky Ekko sat down in a London studio with British producer Justin Parker, who had just co-written Lana Del Rey’s breakout smash "Video Games." Both writers were nursing emotional exhaustion. Parker mapped out a sparse, circular piano chord progression in A minor and C major. Within two hours, Ekko had hummed the core melody and improvised the foundation of the lyrics.
Initially, Ekko hesitated to give the song away. The lyrics felt too autobiographical, capturing the uneasy purgatory of loving someone through instability. When Rihanna’s management team heard the reference demo, she immediately demanded the cut for Unapologetic. Instead of replacing Ekko's vocals entirely with another major celebrity, Rihanna insisted on preserving the original demo's spirit, transforming the solitary monologue into a tense, conversational vocal duet.
