Complete Guide to Singing Rihanna's 'Stay': Lyrics, Chords, and Vocal Harmonies
By James H. Sterling
The definitive moment for "Stay" arrived at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards on February 10, 2013. Flanked only by a black piano and Mikky Ekko in a sharp tuxedo, Rihanna delivered one of the most celebrated live performances of her career. Free from complex choreography, backup dancers, or pyrotechnics, the televised performance proved her technical vocal growth to millions of critics who had previously labeled her strictly an autotuned dance-pop artist.
That broadcast permanently shifted how contemporary pop approached the ballad. Within weeks, the track soared to number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and went on to sell over ten million certified units globally. The performance proved that in an era dominated by hyper-compressed digital production, listeners craved organic piano resonance and emotional authenticity. It transformed "Stay" from an album cut into a permanent fixture of vocal auditions, live sets, and acoustic repertoires.
