Cast Vs. Real Life: Side-by-Side Breakdown of the Straight Outta Compton Stars
Eric "Eazy-E" Wright was the charismatic centerpiece of N.W.A. He had high-pitched vocals, trademark Locs sunglasses, and an undeniable street swagger that launched Ruthless Records. Finding someone who could inhabit Wright's unique spirit without turning him into a caricature seemed almost impossible until Jason Mitchell walked into the audition room.
Mitchell, a New Orleans native who had never visited California before testing for the role, sent in an audition tape that stopped Gray and Dre in their tracks. He gained weight, adopted Wright’s distinctive Compton cadence, and mastered the difficult left-handed gestures Eazy-E was known for. Mitchell carried the second half of the film almost entirely on his shoulders. His depiction of Wright's tragic decline from HIV-related complications in 1995 provided the movie with an emotional center, bringing Wright's real-life family to tears during early private screenings.
